The 9th Virginia Cavalry team rosters are determined through a qualification system based on the number of hits obtained while shooting a timed paper qualification target package.  The package consists of

-- UNIT1

[a black-sided pigeon, a white 4-inch tile, a white 4-inch pot] and

-- UNIT 2

[a white 6-inch tile and a white 6-inch ‘paper plate’ or circle].

The qualifications are begun in January and a member can shoot as many qualification rounds as they want throughout the year.  The two best, or highest, hit scores are used to determine a shooter’s score.  The two highest scores are averaged.  A hit is any shot that touches or is within the target.  The relay is started with a loaded capped firearm like a normal skirmish event.  The timed qualifications must be witnessed by another N-SSA member and his signature and competitor number placed on the qualification roll.

For the MUSKET TEAM, the targets are shot with a timed 2-minute relay for each target.

At 50-yards, UNIT 1 is shot.
